There is almost no organ in the body that is not harmed by smoking. It is why it is the principal cause of premature death in the US that is also preventable. It is predicted that in one year almost 5,00,000 people die of smoking in the country. Individuals who are above 60 and smoke are two times more likely to die than those who don’t. On average, smokers pass away six years earlier than non-smokers.

If we are not careful about tobacco prevention, the diseases that come hand in hand with it will rule all humans. On the other side, if people give up smoking and tobacco, they will see immediate health paybacks. So much so, that the life expectancy of a person can increase after quitting (if it is done at the right age). Let’s take a look at some of the illness’ tobacco can cause.

• Tobacco smoke has almost 70 chemicals that are carcinogenic, which means they can cause cancer. It is why cigarettes cause nearly 30% of cancer deaths.
• Smokers are twice times susceptible to cancer and fatality than non-smokers.
• Heavy smokers have 4 times the risk of dying from cancer than non-smokers.
• The most significant risk of tobacco use is lung cancer. 80% to 90% of lung cancer patients can be linked to cigarette smoking, which has made it the chief cause of cancer deaths in all genders.
• 80% of cancer patients die due to lung cancer.
• Smoking enhances the risk of lung cancer 5 to 10 times. The probability is even higher in heavy smokers.
• Besides lung cancers, tobacco smoke can cause cancer of:

o Mouth
o Pharynx
o Larynx
o Oesophagus
o Stomach
o Pancreas
o Cervix
o Kidney
o Bladder

• Tobacco can cause cancer in all its form and not just cigarette smoke. Eating tobacco has been linked to colorectal cancer, pharynx cancer, oesophagus cancer, and stomach cancer.
• More than cancer, smoking can lead to diseases like:

o chronic bronchitis
o emphysema
o exacerbates asthma symptoms not just children but also adults

• Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) is one more disease that is affected by tobacco. The worst news of COPD is that once it develops in a person there is no way to repair it with time even if the person stops smoking.

The long list of conditions is only part of the diseases that are caused by tobacco. It is high-time everyone starts working on tobacco prevention.
